Recovering from Depression - Part 2

psychetruth asked:

Dr. John Breeding, Ph.D. Psychologist, talks about depression. In this video he discusses the how psychology and psychiatry differ from their approach to depression. Is depression really a chemical imbalance in the brain or a psychological problem? Often time people are given antidepressants like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, Celexa, Lexapro, Effexor or Wellbutrin.

SSRI (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are often promoted as correcting chemical imbalances in the brain but there is no proof that depression or mental illness is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain nor is there any proof that antidepressants correct an imbalance. These medications often time have horrible side effects like agitation and sexual dysfunction.

This is a different view of depression.

In this video Dr. Breeding will discuss tips on how to recover from depression, become a more happy person.

I was the same. I started smoking weed almost everyday for a year. And that year was one of the best years I had had for a while. But then my depression caught up on me again and smoking weed made it worse. So I knew I had to stop and sort the problem out some other way. I have not tried anti depressants but it sounds like there side affects are a lot worse than smoking weed. If your not where you won’t to be in life you may need to put it down. It depends on the person I suppose.

I think weed can cause depression, I’d stop smoking it, especially if you notice that it is directly related.

i liked this vid a lot. one piece of advice that helps me sometimes is to remember, “this, too shall pass” no matter how bad it gets. i hope someone reads this who needs it, and it helps someone like it’s helped me.

I can appreciate your standing on drugs but I have a question that is serious although it may sound ridiculous. I am seeing a pyscologist next week through my insurance provider. I have dealt with depression for some time now ( in and out ) but I have noticed the biggest difference since I stopped smoking marijuana daily. I still smoke occasionally, and it is really the only time I feel better. Is this just in my head? Would it be a bad thing to mention when I go in to get assessed? Thanks, greg

There is another book out now by someone who says she is “Manic-Depressive” (The book is called “Manic”).

I am not happy to say but sometimes I think somebody need these psychodrugs, yes they are overprescribed, but you can do good food, sleep, talking therapy or exercise but still not getting better.
For example like me i have pdd nos, OCD (tics) and had 2 years ago a trauma when my mentally state only getting worse and suffer whit alot of stress all day when i am awake every day again.

are you talking to people who were depressed and are no longer depressed? Former patients who might have an interesting story about how they recovered?

I don’t think he really is. I’ve never really discussed his spiritual beliefs w/ him though.

It’s been so long since I shot this video. I can’t recall the book he recommends. You can usually find any book on amazon(dot)com but by goggling “book title” and the word amazon.
