Are You Falling Into Depression

October 28th, 2008 · No Comments

Depression might not be much of a big deal for some, especially when you consider that every person experiences it from time to time. The problem with depression is that it might hang on to you in the most unpleasant of ways. Soon enough, you might not want to associate with a lot of people around you, or worse still, you might feel like hurting someone. That is when it really is a problem. But like I always advice – don’t let it control you. Instead, YOU should control it!

I am yet to find a suicide case that was not as a result of some kind of depression or the other. Save for fear of something else happening to them, people who kill themselves do so because they can’t find another way through their situation. This is the very evidence of classic depression. But the truth remains that there is hardly any situation that one can’t find a solution out of. So, never thing it’s too late for you, no matter how depressed you are.

There are many mental illnesses that make themselves evident in countless different ways. Depression is one of the most common of them. All over the world, up to 8 percent of adults suffer depression occasionally, and in the United States, it is prevalent as much as 17% of the adult populace. Try to cheer up eating a delicious chocolate dessert.

Mostly, women suffer more from depression and its symptoms than men do. Due to the secretion of the estrogen hormone during ovulation, menstruation, and even with the coming of age, it’s like they just switch between moods all the time. And depression is one of those moods.

You could become a victim of depression yourself if you take it for granted. Whatever your age, everyone is subject to the emotion and its destructive force. In the past it was only linked to adult emotions, but not anymore. You ought to be very careful these days with the kinds of thoughts you allow to take root in your mind. The more negative stories you listen to, the more tendencies for depression you are allowing into your life.

Some call it a “nervous breakdown,” but really it’s just depression. Alright, you might argue that there is nothing “just” about depression, and you wouldn’t be wrong. However when you appear dazed and confused, topped with the frightened look in your eyes half the time, you can’t blame the people around you for thinking things.

People with major depression feel sad all the time – nearly every minute of every day. Often they cry, and they find it difficult to find joy in any of those wonderful things they used to love. Really, there is nothing pleasant about having or living with depression.

All classes of people suffer depression. The elderly will complain of physical and emotional problems, although the physical ones are usually more prominent. As a matter of fact, this makes the condition difficult to make out, causing a physician to misdiagnose the illness at times.

There are a number of psychotic symptoms that come along with depression. You could begin to have delusions and hallucinations, believing things to be what they are not. Naturally, you could take actions based on these and live to regret them afterward. That’s why you can’t allow depression to hang on to you for too long. You can even give them a cocoa gift, so they can cheer up.

Some people get so depressed that they become psychotic. When this happens, their treatment periods often tend to be longer than other suffers because the condition has become critical. Someone like that needs longer time in a hospital.

There are environmental factors that influence depression and its distribution in certain geographical locations. However, the environment is not anywhere as potent as inheritance. Once you have a parent suffer serious depression, you might be next in line. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about it. You can do something about it, starting with the realization that you are prone to the condition. This should help you to constantly fill yourself up with only positive thoughts to keep you away from depression.

There are certain hormones or enzymes in the human body that help to regulate your emotions. They are called neurotransmitters and some of them are involved in depression. Norepinephrine is one, dopamine is another, and serotonin is a third.

It is one thing to experience a real loss, and it is something else when what you have lost is something you conceived for yourself… some kind of imagination. Depression could get to you through any of these if you give it any room. If something is important to you, be careful about attachments because losing them could make you depressed.

The failure to achieve an important goal is a serious loss for some people, and cause for serious depression. It is just one of the many things that humans respond to, and it sets of a chain of events that if prolonged could weaken you such that you are virtually senseless. You must have heard of depression sufferers who turn out like that. Try to cheer up. Have a sweet celebration. It may help.

Let me treat you to a few words and phrases that relate to depression: helplessness, hopelessness, grief, lack of direction or understanding. Do you find anything familiar yet? Here’s more: prolonged exposure to uncontrollable and inescapable events, apathy, pessimism, loss of motivation; I’m just warming up… this list is endless. And here’s the catch, none of those words are good feelings. Don’t allow them into your life. They don’t belong with you. Get rid of them as much as you can.

People who suffer from depression usually have an overbearing criticism of others. This however is often as a result of how they see and blame themselves for just about everything. They get these deep feelings of inadequacy that they are never able to shake off, and if you stayed around them long enough, they could infect you with it.
