Hi
I am very interested in pursuing a volunteer job at a depression hotline. I was just curious to know if anyone has had any experience with this- I’d love to hear about your experience.

Also, although I don’t know the specifics, I’m sure there’s some sort of training involved in order to know how to deal with certain situations and such (They can’t let just any random yahoo come off the streets to do this job). I’m curious as to what sort of training would be involved, and what kind of red tape I would need to get through in order to acquire a position like this. Thanks!

Hi! I’m not sure what the qualifications are, but if you call the hotline you are interested in working with and ask to volunteer, I’m sure they could send you either some information or tell you who to contact. You could also contact your local Community Mental Health agency, just look in the phone book.

This is a great thing you are wanting to do, and I wish you all the best with it. As someone who has dealt with depression, I know how valuable a good listener and postive reinforcer are to helping you get out of the blackness.
