I love this! This is probably the best, most intelligent thing I’ve ever seen on youtube. Thank-you, Clara, for sharing your wisdom, stories, and recipes with all of us. I’m thinking of hosting a depression-era dinner! Thank-you again and take care!

    Sound cooking advice :-)
It saddens me.. there is more than enough food for everyone on this planet. Why must history repeat itself :’(

You are so blessed to have such a wonderful mother. I too had such a wonder mother whom I lost 2 years ago at the age of 69 and she too told us stories of the Great Depression in Richmond, Va.

Your video made me cry because it reminded me of wonderful memories; may they never go away!
I am going to try your mom’s recipe just because she sounds like one smart Lady.

It’s called survival, folks. Black folks during slavery made fine cuisine out of pig intestines, pig ears, pig testicles, and pig feet.

lol I know what you were implying. I was in a randy mood and picking at details. I was being a dickhead. For what it is worth, I think teachers are amazing and only a truly amazing teacher would use this as a resource. Now get outta here! If people see us holding hands, they wont understand and throw rocks at us.

  • 17 chompy44 // Sep 20, 2008 at 1:25 am

lol. I was being a ****. I know what you were trying to say.

  • 18 krystaeh // Sep 23, 2008 at 6:04 am

Yes, I do understand that; however, I was implying that we are losing the people who were of adult-age during this time in history, who can share first hand accounts with students, rather than just reading it from a text, or watching a documentary. I was just sharing a comment that one of my students made.

When I was a kid in the late 60’s and 70’s, my neighbor Carl was an old bachelor man who lived by himself in a 2 room cabin with a wood stove, no electric, an outdoor water well, and no bathroom. But he was great, he loved kids,(not a freak, don’t worry)and he used to entertain us, and make us homemade bread on his wood stove, and hot chocolate on snowy days. He’d come get us when his pond was frozen so we could slide, and we could watch him work his blacksmith shop. I loved him. He got me shoes

no offense, information on the great depression is everywhere and easily obtained.

  • 22 krystaeh // Oct 2, 2008 at 4:09 pm

This is a wonderful resource to use when teaching students about the great depression! I was so thankful for this resource, as we are slowly losing this information as time goes by. Thank you, Clara!
